Layer Manager Xref Madness
Like many architecture firms, we use a single xref file with all of our layers overlapping. Then we create layer manager states to toggle between floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, etc. When you xref this file into another, the layer states come with it. The problem arises if you ever need to change those layer states in the original file. The xref'd lman states that came in when you inserted the xref originally do not update, but rather remain whatever they were when you intially brought in the xref.
The only way to fix this I've found is to delete the xref, purge and toggle visretain on and off a few times untill the xref states disapear from the lman dialog box. then once you re-import the xref the up to date lman states come with it.
there has GOT to be a better way to do this. when there are several host files sharing the same xref, you can't go doing this in every file just to update the lman states. Exporting the layer states does not work because the xref and the host file don't share layer names (because autocad adds a prefix to all layer names)

Alternate dims headache
Hi and thanks for looking...
I have been using AutoCad since v2.1 on DOS and have worked in metric units forever. Now that I have moved to a country that requires both metric and imperial dimensions on drawings, I'm stumped over how to make alternate dims work.
For arguments sake, I draw a rectangle 25.4mm x 25.4mm and with my default metric dimensions, it correctly shows 25.4 units.
I turn on alternate units, set my format to Architectural stacked and my precision to 1/16". The multiplyer is automatically set to 25.4 (mm per inch).
The resulting dimension now shows 25.4 [53'-9 3/16"] which is obviously 25.4 times 25.4 inches.
I want it to be 25.4 [1"]
Dimscale = 1
What and where are the settings that correct this behaviour?
Thanks in advance.

paper space, model space, headaches with plotting and FDO data.
Hello,
We're using Map 2010 with Mapguide. From model space we've created a bunch of FDO database polylines. The users have paper space tabs with fancy titleblocks and viewports. I need to be able to export their DWF's from paper space, but mix them with the model space polyines in Mapguide.
Naturally these two are out scale. I've tried using the EXPORTLAYOUT command from paper space, which copies that entire tab to model space. I was hoping i could then plot this output to DWF. Problem is, while this is in model space it retained it's paper space scale! So that solution won't work.
Second possiblity was using the CHSPACE command on the titleblock in paper space. This nicely converted the title block to model space around the area we want to plot. Problem is, there is linework between where the edge of the viewport would've been and the titleblock. This gives us extra, unwanted data.
How can I achieve my goal of having the ability to plot from paperspace with viewports to hone in on my maps, while at the same time mixing it would FDO data that was converted to the database from model space?

Move and copy - very slow
I have 2010 full version on my ASUS laptop.
Core I7, Geforce GTX460M, 8GB ram
and for a while now when I move, copy or stretch there is a long delay in using those commands.
I did disk cleanup, and a registry cleaner and this helped a little but not nearly enough.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

CAD brings up classicxref but I want the new xref palette instead.
I recently installed Autocad 2010 on a new computer and I'm having a few issues. When i was asked if i wanted to migrate settings i had choosen Autocad 2008 thinking it would migrate my lisps and other useful settings but instead I think it migrated some system variable settings. I like to use the new x-ref tool pallete since I can attach pdf/dwf and other image files rather than do the pdfattach command and other commands like that. When i do x-ref on this new computer the older xref dialogue box and I'm not sure how to fix this issue. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate the help.

Dimension that Spans 2 drawings
A little help please;
I'm trying to get everyone on the right page, but I can't find any reference to how to properly show a dimnesion that spans across 2 different drawings (with use of a matchline or on a piping isometric that is split). Would either of these examples be the correct way to show a dimension that spans 2 drawing files? Is there a different way to show a dimension that is to span 2 drawings?

Thanks for your help on this.

Right Click Fly-Out Menu
While being distracted while working, I inadvertantly kept my finger on a key (forget which one), heard a little BEEP, and now my Right Click FlyOut Menu is going somewhere I don't need it to go to. I am getting the 'Snap" options box
instead of 'Last Command' Options Box.
Any ideas of what I might have done, and any ideas how to fix it? Thanks,

Buying a computer with AutoCAD preloaded?
I need to upgrade my computer and get a copy of AutoCAD. I dont need a new computer, just one with newer components to handle the newest version of AutoCAD, as mine is relatively old. I have read that buying the software from someone secondhand doesnt transfer the license, but what if a computer with the software already on it is purchased? Thanks

XREFs and text fields
I've been working on creating a drawing format that can't be editted. I've been able to achieve this by creating a file, and making it an XREF and making that file read-only. This isn't 100% secure, though. There is nothing here that stops people from either binding the XREF to the drawing or copying and pasting its geometry into the host file. I've come to accept that there may be no way around this, but I was hoping to identify that this has happened with a text field.
Is there any way to make a text field in the file I wish to use as an XREF that reads the file name of that file and would show it in the host file as well? For instance, if I put the a field in the XREF file that reads XXX.dwg, it would read the same way in the host file. My hope is that if I could do this, it would break this link if the file is bound or the data is copied and pasted into the host file.
Is there anyone who knows of a way this could be done? Thanks.

Plot process hanging
Last week we started having an issue with one of the AutoCAD 2010 installs, When she would go to plot (to any plotter or PDF) the plot process would just hang up and continue to show (in the lower right corner) that it was working, sometimes it would actually print the page but it wouldn't format it right, This morning a second install started doing it too. I chacked and ran though the proceedure for ACAD.VLX virus and it still is doing this. After autocad sits there for a minute showing the plot process the addons reload. I have tried ploting with no addons loaded and I am still getting the same problem. Has anyone ran across this yet?
Machine software config:
Windows 7 64 bit
Autocad 2010 32bit loaded
Microvellum 6.7 addon

Tool Bar Icons don't appear on One Toolbar
I set up a new user with AutoCad. The profile is supposed to be identical to the other users we have. Sadly, I didn't do the install but came in after the fact to tweek the profile and configuration settings.
I built a custom toolbar for the company and it works just fine and always has, in fact I was configuring two systems at the same time. However, on this one machine, the toolbar icons are not showing up. The commands are there and they work, but the icons are not there. The icons are in their correct location in the search file path, so that's not an issue.
I suspect there is a duplicate profile/menu/cui/cuix somewhere that is causeing the problem but I can't seem to find it.
Any ideas??
